Half-Day Trip from Catanzaro: Le Castella
What do Greek mythology, majestic sand castles, and Turkish warships have in common? The answer lies in an almost-forgotten land, just forty minutes from Catanzaro.

Le Castella, whose history is debated by scholars, is shroud with mystery and enchantment. According to Homer, Le Castella was once the home of the Greek goddess, Calypso, and her sea-loving hero, Ulysses. Although the origins of Le Castella remain unknown, it is thought to have been constructed around 200 BC, with lookout towers quickly added by the Carthaginian army leader, Hannibal. Whatever the beginnings, it is known the area was occupied throughout the centuries by Roman and Arabic forces, before surrendering to Turkish invasion in the 1500s.

Today, the remnants offer a glimpse into the rich history of Calabria, and provide breath-taking views of the Ionian Sea and surrounding lands.
